The milk thistle plant is a purple-coloured member of the sunflower family. The plant grows throughout the Mediterranean and was brought to the UK by herbalists in the 16th century.
Extracts of this prickly plant have been harvested for two thousand years, primarily for its natural properties. The key substance within the milk thistle is called silymarin. This is a flavonoid compound extracted from the seeds of the milk thistle plant.
