What is Selenium?

Selenium is a trace mineral essential for good health but only needed in small amounts. It is incorporated into proteins to produce selenoproteins, important antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant properties of selenoproteins help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Free radicals, natural by-products of oxygen metabolism, may contribute to chronic disease development. Other selenoproteins help regulate thyroid function and play a role in the immune system.
